Case Brief

This mechanical pipe expander was not an isolated machine order.
It was one of the key pieces of equipment in a large JCO LSAW steel pipe
production line export project that our team participated in over a period
of several years.

The project involved multiple heavy industrial machines working together
to convert steel plate into large diameter longitudinally submerged arc
welded steel pipe.

Our work included technical coordination, equipment specification review,
communication with manufacturing teams, production follow up, commercial
execution and export delivery coordination.


For a complete pipe mill project, every machine must be evaluated as part
of the production process rather than as an independent piece of equipment.

Where the Expander Fits in a JCO LSAW Line

In a typical JCO LSAW production process, heavy steel plate is first prepared,

The mechanical pipe expander operates after the main forming and welding stages.
Its purpose is not simply to make the pipe larger.

The machine performs controlled mechanical expansion from inside the pipe
along its full length in successive sections.

Why Mechanical Expansion Is Important

After JCO forming and submerged arc welding, the pipe may still contain
dimensional deviations and residual stresses generated during forming
and welding.

Controlled full length mechanical expansion can help improve the final
dimensional condition of the pipe before inspection and delivery.

How Full Length Mechanical Expansion Works

The machine uses an internal segmented expansion head.
The steel pipe is positioned and supported while the expansion mechanism
works from inside the pipe.

Mechanical expansion jaws open against the internal surface of the pipe,
expanding one controlled section at a time.

After one section is completed, the mechanism retracts and the pipe or
expansion system advances to the next position until the required full
pipe length has been processed.

Mechanical Pipe Expander Technical Specifications

Different Pipe Diameters Require Different Expander Heads

A full length mechanical pipe expander is not configured with one universal
expansion head for every pipe diameter.

In this project, multiple expander head ranges were prepared to cover different
large diameter pipe specifications.

426 to 457 mm

508 to 558 mm

610 to 711 mm

762 to 914 mm

965 to 1420 mm

The actual head configuration for a new project should be selected based
on the customer’s production diameter range and product program.

More Than Equipment Supply

Large steel pipe production line projects are very different from purchasing
a standard standalone machine.

Equipment interfaces, production sequence, pipe specifications, utilities,
foundation requirements, installation conditions and commissioning plans
all influence the final project result.

During this multi year project, our involvement extended beyond quotation

What We Learned From This Project

For a mechanical pipe expander, the pipe outside diameter alone is not enough
to select the machine.

From One Machine to the Complete JCO LSAW Line

The full length mechanical pipe expander was only one part of this project.
The complete JCO LSAW production process included multiple forming, welding,
sizing, testing and finishing machines.

We are gradually documenting this project machine by machine so that customers
planning a similar pipe mill can better understand how each piece of equipment
fits into the complete production process.

Complex production lines should be planned as one manufacturing system
not as a collection of independent machines.
